Give a warm welcome to The Little Raw Foodist That Could, an interesting blog concerning health and personal fitness. One of the site's more recent entries, dated January 1, 2008, concerns healthy snacks and the transition to better eating. In reading this post, I was happy to discover the author's praise for LARABAR in general and Cherry Pie and Apple Pie in particular. She recognizes that all natural ingredients form the basis of good nutrition and delicious taste. From my own experience, I know how instrumental LARABAR has been (and remains) in enabling me to select the right foods. Here's to health and happiness.

One of my fondest childhood memories involves Halloween. Each year, until the fifth or sixth grade (twelve is the chronological cutoff for children who, on the cusp of adolescence and having forgone spiral notebooks for leather knapsacks and carpools for subways and public buses, no longer go trick-or-treating), I would canvass most of northern New Jersey for candy. By the time I arrived home, I would discover a team of exhausted rescuers, all of whom had given up hope I would ever return safely. Over the next few days, I would eat all of the candy I had earned during that evening of sheer delight.
As the years have gone by, and as parents more easily appreciate that bags of candy are perhaps not the best way to teach children about healthy snacking, I have a simple recommendation: Why not give LARABARS as Halloween treats? Buy some bars, or slice them up, and offer the costumed revelers some delicious deliciousness.

About four months ago, my brother had his cholesterol checked; the results were, though far from catastrophic, not exactly praiseworthy. Blame it on genetics, and not his insistent bell-ringing at the counter of the local coffee shop: "Sir, excuse me, sir. Yes, thank you. I'll have another slice of your fried butter lard cake, with some cream cheese icing." I know, the doctor was shocked, as we all were, to discover my brother's cholesterol might be slightly elevated.
A week after this news, I decided to get my own cholesterol checked. The reading was, though a bit lower on the call-the-mortician scale, still not exemplary. The mistake was not failure to exercise - I work with a trainer three days a week - but lack of balanced nutrition. Which is to say, an intense workout on the Versaclimber (the best piece of fitness equipment I have ever used) is not a license to devour a vat of rice pudding. My bad!
These days, with the exception of one indulgence meal per week, I regularly consume oatmeal (with a touch - yes, a touch - of brown sugar), sushi or grilled salmon, avocado (with my egg whites or sandwiches), fat-free yogurt and a delicious LARABAR.
I'll let you know what the doctor says next week. Stay tuned!

Folks, a friendly reminder: October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Please do everything you can to promote this cause, whether it's educating people about early prevention or accompanying a friend or family member to see their doctor. Breast cancer is treatable, provided we take this disease seriously. Be well.

I'm alive! Barely. In a fit of delusional mania (are the two mutually exclusive?), I decided to climb - no, crawl - the Santa Monica stairs. 154 stairs. 154 back-breaking, sweat-inducing, cry-for-mercy-but-it-will-do-you-no-good stairs of PAIN. But there was a treat waiting for me after those multiple - count 'em, six - climbs up and down that monument of torture. Oh yes, dear children: I had a Larabar. Dee-licious!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
